Over 40 organisations gathered in the Garforth Academy Sports Hall on Thursday (2nd May) for Futures Day.

This whole school careers event was a busy day for both students and guests. Students visited the careers fair one year group at a time; year 9, 10 and 12 students also heard from guest speakers during special Futures Day assemblies.

Our guests included a fantastic array of education, training and apprenticeship providers (including colleges and universities), and employers representing a range of sectors.

We asked the students: 鈥榃hat key thing/s did you learn during the event?鈥, responses include:

鈥淭here are more jobs in a sector than meets the eye鈥 – Y9 Student

鈥淗ow to speak to people鈥 – Y7 Student

鈥淐ommunication and teamwork are important in all jobs鈥 – Y8 Student

鈥淚 have a lot of options after Y11鈥 – Y10 student

鈥淲hat grades I need to get into certain jobs鈥 – Y11 Student

鈥淭o keep exploring every option鈥 Y12 Student

鈥淗elped me to think about what I might do with my degree choice. Gave me the thought of a Master’s Degree Apprenticeship in journalism after a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy and Literature鈥 – Y12 Student

The students gave fantastic impressions of themselves and made the most of the opportunity; one guest commented:  Students were really engaged and asking excellent questions!鈥

We certainly think the event aim was achieved: to enable students to gather information, explore opportunities, be inspired, and develop questioning and listening skills through encounters with employers and employees.

On behalf of the Garforth Academy students and staff, we wanted to say a massive thank you to all of the guests who gave up so much of their time and energy to make Futures Day the success it was.

“I just wanted to add my thanks to everyone for their support of this event. Careers Education is central to everything we do at Garforth Academy. We want to develop bright, intelligent students who are ready for the next stages of their lives when they leave us. Trying to give students access to the world of employment is very difficult with 2000 students! However, events like Futures Day means that we can have an impact on all students in one day. Whilst we acknowledge that there will always be a lot more to do to make students 鈥渨orkplace ready鈥 this event is the foundation of this process and we really appreciate your support with this”

Vice Principal & Head of Sixth Form, Mark Newstead

We鈥檇 like to extend an extra special thank you to the guest speakers:

Y9 and Y10 Post 16 Options Assembly: Janet Clark (DWP Schools and College Advisor), Lucy Walker (York College), Anna Westmoreland (Heart of Yorkshire Education Group) and James and Molly (current Y12 students).

Y12 Post 18 Options Assembly: Jess Shearer (Huddersfield Uni), Chris Mullen (Edge Hill University), Lynda Beever (ASK Apprenticeships/West Yorkshire Apprenticeship Hub), and Dom and Beth (ex-Garforth Academy students).

We鈥檙e incredibly proud of the students involved in the Next Gen Leaders programme. The two Garforth Academy NextGenLeader teams ‘The Breaking Free Project’ and ‘Red Tape The Vape’ were recognised with awards at the recent regional celebration event.

The NextGenLeaders programme encourages students to develop employability skills through creating and implementing a student led social impact project.

300 young people representing 16 schools across Yorkshire gathered at the regional celebration event hosted at the ASDA MCE in Leeds City Centre to present their projects to a large audience of adult judges and peers. Each project was inspirational and full of passion… the judges had a difficult task!

The Breaking Free Project presenting their work to judges and peers.

Whole Team:
Top Row L to R: Chloe Y10, Hanna Y10, Amy Y10, Eva Y10, Tia Y13, Josh Y12, Katie Y10, James Baldwin Y12, Sophie Y12, Sarah Steel (Future Talent Specialist, ASDA).
Bottom Row: Olivia Y10.聽
Judges’ Choice: James Y12 accepting the award on behalf of Red Tape the Vape.
L to R: Becks Wheatley (Programme Manager, NextGenLeaders), James Y12, James Pirie (VP Planning & Logistics, Arla Foods).

鈥楾he Breaking Free Project鈥 is a group of 5 Year 10 students breaking down gender inequality through working with primary aged children to combat gender stereotypes linked to academic subjects and careers. Their recent workshops have focused on raising the profile of STEM careers with girls.

Red Tape The Vape is a group of 5 students (Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13). They鈥檝e been campaigning for tighter legislation around the sale of vapes and aim to educate young people on the dangers of vaping.

The Breaking Free Project team came away with the 鈥楪ender Equality鈥 award, and Red Tape The Vape were recognised with the 鈥楯udges Choice鈥 award. Year 12 student Sophie, from Red Tape the Vape, was commended for her hard work and commitment with a 鈥楥hangemaker of the year鈥 award.

As last year鈥檚 regional champions, Red Tape The Vape were asked to summarise their NextGenLeader journey for a special feature at the celebration event.

Take a look at what they’ve achieved since September 2022 (this video was created 100% by the students).

鈥淭he students have been pushed out of their comfort zone but have embraced the unique experiences that the Next Gen Leaders programme offers. The biggest win for me isn鈥檛 the trophies, it鈥檚 that these incredible young people recognise that they鈥檝e developed teamworking skills, presentation skills, confidence, communication skills, resilience and the ability to balance priorities- their future applications are going to be amazing.鈥

Lauren Llewellyn, Garforth Academy Careers Lead

The programme has also resulted in another success story which evidences the power of facilitating students to develop their professional network. A Year 13 student who was part of the programme last year has been offered a Degree Apprenticeship accredited by Manchester University with one of the stakeholder organisations as a direct result of her involvement in Next Gen Leaders. Grace is looking forward to embarking on her Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship at ASDA HQ in September.

Last month, hosted a successful collaborative project aimed at improving the school’s relationship with the wider community while tackling a shared concern 鈥 litter on the local estate.

Following feedback from residents, the academy joined forces with (WDH) and local police officers to address the issue. Year 5 pupils, alongside dedicated staff members, actively participated in a litter-picking event, making a visible difference in the area.

This initiative extended beyond the clean-up. Students, along with the council, conducted an audit of the estate, identifying areas for further improvement.

The goal is to develop long-term solutions that ensure a cleaner and more welcoming environment for everyone.

Time to Warm Up

After all of their hard work, the Year 5s warmed up with a classic hot chocolate in the Community Centre after collecting 27 very full bags of litter.

It was a great way to finish the activity before heading back to the Academy for their indoor task.

Inspiring the Local Community Through Art

After cleaning up the local estate, pupils were then tasked with making posters to encourage people to stop littering which could be made into one big piece of artwork, showcasing their amazing collaboration with the community)

At Simpson’s Lane Academy, we have been looking at ways to help continue to build our relationship with the school community.

It was a fantastic day and the children were able to collect 27 overflowing bags of litter. We have already started to look at the next projects we can do in collaboration with the council in the coming months.

Teacher engagement with the also witnessed a significant increase, with the percentage of homework assignments viewed in the Insights page by teachers jumping by 13 percentage points, climbing from 45% to a commendable 57%.

Standing out amongst hundreds of schools using Sparx, Melior Community Academy’s dedication to fostering a positive learning environment and maximising student success is truly commendable. De Warenne Academy Student Wins Big in National Writing Competition!

is celebrating the success of its Creative Writing Club students after four of their entries were chosen for publication in a national anthology!

As part of the club’s focus on entering writing competitions, students were encouraged to participate in the Young Writers UK ghost story competition. Inspired by a visit from renowned Penguin author Lisette Auton, these young writers put pen to paper and crafted chilling tales.

The Academy is thrilled to announce that four students had their work chosen for publication in the Young Writers’ “Ghost Stories: Spine Chillers” anthology. But the accolades don’t stop there! Lewis, a Year 9 student, was even selected as one of the overall UK winners for his spine-tingling story “Son of Dracula.”

Here is his winning entry:

Son of Dracula

Whitby Abbey was an eerie sight on Halloween, jagged shadows cloaking the security guard completing his final check of the graveyard. With every minute, the veil grew thinner, until the witching hour struck, and with it, the creature within.

Instantly, the man鈥檚 spirit was banished by Alucard, son of Dracula. His body was ripe for possession, a perfect disguise for Alucard to begin his vengeful mission. Painite, the world鈥檚 rarest gemstone, granted immunity to a vampire鈥檚 sole weakness: garlic. And it was hidden right here. Nobody
suspected the security guard sneaking inside the Abbey to claim his prize.

When Alucard touched it, unfathomable power rushed around the globe in a blood-red ring of energy. The long-awaited immunity to garlic coursed through his veins. Now, nobody could stop his ultimate plan: bringing his father back to life, spared
from his only weakness.

Just imagining the terror they would cause drove the villainous son back to the graveyard where his father waited. Finally, Alucard began to read aloud the spell he had been working on for millennia.

鈥淭hose people who choose to sneer, Shall be no more as my father is HERE!鈥

As lightning struck the coffin and Dracula rose from death, Alucard was overcome with emotion. He leapt to embrace his father, when a blade pierced stolen ribs. Dracula had stabbed him!
Alucard鈥檚 soul drifted into his father鈥檚 form, bestowing their combined power upon the ancient vampire. Twice as powerful, and free from all weaknesses, the entire world was his to command.

Lewis’s achievement comes with a double reward. Not only will his story be featured in the anthology, but he’s also received a 拢25 National Book Token from Young Writers UK and a special book prize from the school.

Congratulations to Lewis and all the De Warenne Academy students who participated in the competition! Their dedication to creative writing is a true inspiration.

has been recognised for its outstanding careers education. The academy has been awarded the national Quality in Careers Standard awarded under licence by (Part of the Shaw Trust Group).聽

The Quality in Careers Standard is awarded to schools and education providers who can demonstrate the importance they place on careers and how they support students to make decisions about their life after school.

The Vale Academy is continually working to improve the life chances and opportunities of all their students, recognising the importance of preparing students for their future careers.

There is a statutory duty to 鈥榮ecure independent careers guidance鈥 for all students from year 8 onwards and the Government also recommends that all schools should be required to work towards the national Quality in Careers Standard.

Achieving the national Quality in Careers Standard shows the Principal Sarah Stokes, AAB and leadership team at The Vale Academy embrace, promote and endorse quality careers education and recognise the part it plays in the overall success of the school and its students.

鈥淲e are thrilled to have another Delta Academy achieve the national Quality in Careers Standard awarded. At The Vale Academy they recognise the important role school plays in helping students develop their knowledge, skills and experience so they can go out into the world and achieve personal success and ensure their students are receiving advice, practical support and experience so they are prepared for the next stage of their education, employment, self-employment or training.鈥

We are delighted that 新加坡多多六合彩开奖结果, in partnership with , and , has received approval to open new Alternative Provision schools for children aged 8-16. Delta has also received approval to open an 11-16 Alternative Provision in partnership with S.

This will help meet the need for high quality alternative provision places in the Calderdale, Barnsley, Kirklees and Stockton-on-Tees areas, to inspire and support young people to re-engage in learning.

These purpose-built schools will allow our young people to benefit from a broad, enriching, and inclusive curriculum, delivered through outstanding teaching and learning. The schools will follow the highly successful Delta model, which incorporates the blueprint of the DfE’s alternative provision Taskforce pilot, embedding multi-agency support within a school setting.

The new schools will provide state-of-the-art environments for students to undertake their studies in high-quality settings. We are excited we will be able to offer an ambitious range of academic and technical subjects, underpinned by individualised pastoral support, care and career guidance, which will equip students with the skills and knowledge to help them take their next steps in education, training, or employment.

We look forward to working with Calderdale Council, Barnsley Council, Kirklees Council, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and a wide range of stakeholders to deliver these inspiring projects.

Our vision is for students to feel safe, valued and part of a community, so that they develop a sense of self-belief, aspiration and pride in their ability and achievements.

We look forward to working closely with young people, parents, staff and wider stakeholders to realise this vision.

Jo Pittard, Executive Principal, 新加坡多多六合彩开奖结果

I am delighted that more young people will have the opportunity to benefit from the personalised approach to learning and the outstanding enrichment curriculum which has been rightly recognised by Ofsted at Delta鈥檚 current alternative provision academies.

I look forward to working with Jo, the wider team and key local stakeholders to deliver this exciting project for the benefit of local young people and the wider community.

Paul Tarn, CEO, 新加坡多多六合彩开奖结果

We are delighted that our joint bid with 新加坡多多六合彩开奖结果 for a new alternative provision free school has been successful. This will result in a brand new, purpose-built facility in Calderdale to support some of our most vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people.

It will contribute towards our priority to reduce inequalities, and our commitment to support young people to have the best possible start in life and to reach their full potential.

Cllr Adam Wilkinson, Calderdale Council鈥檚 Cabinet Member for Children and Young People鈥檚 Services

BMBC are delighted that our joint application for a new Alternative Provision Free School for Barnsley has been successful. Barnsley Council are looking forward to working in partnership with 新加坡多多六合彩开奖结果 to create a school which will provide positive outcomes for our most vulnerable young people.

Cllr Trevor Cave, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children鈥檚 Services

We are thrilled that a new school will be opening in Kirklees to support our children and young people.

Many pupils with additional needs make more sustained progress when they can access a specialist setting, and creating additional SEND provision is also vital to families, as well as pupils themselves.

The council has already made a multi-million-pound commitment to rebuild two existing special schools, as well as transforming SEND services and support across the district.

We are delighted to be working with 新加坡多多六合彩开奖结果. The Alternative Provision Free School will be another way for vulnerable pupils to fulfil their potential for many years to come.
